How the Ferrari 488 Spider is Different From the 458 Spider

The colorful 488 Spider replaces the 458 Spider in the Ferrari lineup. The renowned Ferrari 3.9L V8 twin turbo engine is part of the engine family that was awarded International Engine of the Year in 2016, 2017, and 2018. This power unit is the most high-performance engine ever, and has zero turbo lag; it’s constructed to offer blistering performance combined with high revs, razor-sharp responsiveness, and powerful acceleration at all speeds. The Variable Torque Management system provides a progressive torque delivery in higher gears, and the steering response times are 9% faster than the previous Spider thanks to the evolution of the Side Slip Angle Control System.

The Ferrari Styling Center started with a Retractable Hard Top (RHT) and set new technological benchmarks. The muscular creases along the body form resemble the 308GTB with the scallops on the door leading to the new side air intakes. The front of the car creates a sense of power and speed, and is characterized by a single grille opening. Enhancing the open-air driving experience, the 488 Spider debuted a new color called Blu Corsa to blend with the sky. Constructed from 11 different aluminum alloys, the 488 Spider’s chassis is 20 percent more rigid than the 458 Spider’s.

Improvements

Many of the Ferrari 488 Spider’s improvements over the 458 Spider are in terms of mechanical efficiency, internal dynamics, and aerodynamics. The result is an aerodynamic efficiency figure of 1.53, setting a new record for a Ferrari production Spider. The aerodynamic underbody with vortex generators accelerate air, reduce pressure, and generate downforce. The latest evolution of the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) guarantees even more efficient ABS intervention in low-grip situations.Everything works together to minimize drag and maximize downforce. The patented blown rear spoiler allows air to enter from the base of the rear window through a slot that exits above the license plate to deliver downforce. The rear diffuser on the 488 Spider features variable flap geometry controlled by a CPU, integrated with other vehicle control systems that optimize the expansion of air channeled under the car. The 488 Spider also incorporates Brembo Extreme Design brakes, which are the most efficient ever developed by Ferrari, and also found on the LaFerrari.
