When it comes to supercars and high-performance vehicles, they can almost feel like they’re from another world, but they’re not as complicated as you might think. Our Continental AutoSports Ferrari dealer team in Hinsdale is here to help and tell you everything you need to know about the Ferrari Spider and what it means.

Ferrari Convertible: A Modern Touch

“Spider” is a term used to describe Ferrari convertibles. There’s a bit of controversy about how the Ferrari Spider term came to be, but there are two reasonable explanations for the interesting name given to Ferrari convertibles. The first, and most probable one, dates back to the time of horse-drawn carriages and how people noted they looked like the legs of a spider.

The second and less likely explanation for the “spider” name boils down to the smallest miscommunication at an auto show. It was here where a journalist had seen the famous Porsche 550 Speeder on display and had asked what it was. But due to the language barrier, when they were told its name, “speeder” had been turned into “spider”. And it stuck. Granted, it does sound a bit fantastical, but no matter how the name came to be, it still makes for quite an interesting story.
